Medewi is on the west coast of Bali, in Jembrana Regency, and getting there is fairly straightforward once you know which way you’re going.
The journey is part of the experience. As you leave the busier parts of southern Bali behind, the landscape becomes more rural, with rice fields, villages and long stretches of coastline.
Most visitors arrive in Medewi by car or scooter, travelling west along Bali’s main coastal road towards Gilimanuk.
Where is Medewi?
Medewi is on Bali’s west coast, on the main route between southern Bali and Gilimanuk, the ferry port connecting Bali with Java.
The main road passes through or close to the villages around Medewi, so you don’t need to take a remote mountain route to get there, although it’s often a single carriage road.

From Bali Airport to Medewi
Most international visitors will arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar Airport.
From the airport, the simplest option is to arrange a private car or driver.
Allow several hours rather than relying on the shortest possible journey-time estimate. Traffic around southern Bali and Tabanan can make a significant difference, particularly at busy times. Current travel sources put the journey at anything from around two hours to three or more depending on conditions.
If you’re arriving after a long flight, having a driver meet you at the airport is probably the easiest option.
How to get to Medewi: Private driver
A private driver is the option I’d choose if arriving directly from the airport.
You can arrange a transfer before you arrive, either through your accommodation or independently. This means you can get straight into the car when you land rather than having to work out transport at the airport.
It’s particularly useful if you’re carrying surfboards or a lot of luggage.
From Canggu, Seminyak or the south of Bali
If you’re already staying in southern Bali, you’ll travel west towards Tabanan before continuing along the coast towards Medewi.
Allow several hours rather than relying on the shortest possible journey-time estimate. Traffic around southern Bali and Tabanan can make a significant difference, particularly at busy times.
The route is straightforward, although it becomes increasingly rural as you travel west.
If you’re doing a longer Bali trip, Medewi makes a good stop between the south of the island and the far west.
Driving to Medewi
If you’re comfortable driving in Bali, you can hire a car or scooter and make your own way to Medewi.
The main route follows the south coast towards Gilimanuk. Once you’re away from the busiest areas around the south of the island, the scenery becomes much more rural.
However, this is also an important transport route for traffic travelling between Bali and Java. Large vehicles use the road, and conditions can be busy, particularly around the main towns.
If you’re not confident riding a scooter in Bali, this isn’t somewhere I’d recommend learning. A private driver is a much easier option.
How to get to Medewi by scooter
Scooters are a common way for travellers to explore Bali, and Medewi can be reached by scooter from the south.
The journey is considerably longer than a short tourist-area ride, though, and you’ll be sharing the main road with other traffic.
If you do ride, make sure you have the appropriate licence and insurance and are genuinely comfortable riding in Bali’s traffic and road conditions.
For a longer journey like this, don’t choose a scooter simply because it’s cheaper. A car with a driver can be a much more comfortable option.
From further west
If you’re travelling from Balian, Gilimanuk or West Bali, Medewi is on the main route heading east towards southern Bali.
Medewi also works well as part of a west Bali itinerary. You can continue west towards Gilimanuk and the ferry to Java, or head further into West Bali towards places such as Pemuteran and West Bali National Park.
Can you get to Medewi by public transport?
There are buses and local services travelling along the main road between Denpasar and Gilimanuk, although public transport is less straightforward for visitors than arranging a car or driver.
Older travel information also describes local buses and minibuses stopping along the main highway, but services and arrangements can change, so I’d check locally before relying on public transport for a specific journey.
If you’re carrying a surfboard or lots of luggage, a private transfer is likely to be considerably easier.
Getting to your accommodation
Once you’re in the Medewi area, your accommodation should be able to give you directions or arrange a local transfer.
Medewi isn’t one compact town centre. Accommodation is spread around the coastal villages and inland areas, so it’s worth putting your exact accommodation name into your map rather than simply navigating to “Medewi”.
This is particularly important if you’re arriving after dark.
We stayed at Nyamo Surfschool & Stay, and our host Riki arranged a driver to collect us from the airport. It made arriving after a long flight very easy.
The journey is part of the trip
One of the things I liked about travelling to Medewi was watching Bali change as we headed further west.
The busy tourist areas gradually give way to smaller towns, rice fields and a much quieter stretch of coast.
By the time you arrive, Medewi feels a world away from the busier parts of southern Bali — which is likely the reason you’re coming here in the first place.
Getting Around Medewi
Once you’ve arrived, you don’t necessarily need a car for every day.
Scooters are useful if you’re comfortable riding, and local transport or drivers can be arranged for longer journeys.
For shorter trips around the beach and local restaurants, you can also walk from many places to stay.
