When to Visit Medewi, Bali

Medewi is a year-round destination, but when you visit will make a difference to the weather, the surf and how busy the area feels.

The dry season runs roughly from April to October, while November to March is generally wetter. That doesn’t mean you should rule out the wet season, though. Rain can come in bursts rather than lasting all day, and Medewi is much quieter than some of Bali’s better-known destinations.

We visited Medewi in September, which meant warm, mostly dry weather and good conditions for spending time outside.

Medewi in the dry season

April to October is generally the drier time of year in Medewi. Rainfall drops considerably through the middle of the year, with July, August and September among the driest months.

This is a good time if you want to spend most of your days outdoors, whether that’s surfing, exploring the beaches, riding around the surrounding countryside or simply sitting somewhere with a cold drink and watching the world go by.

July and August are also the traditional peak holiday months in Bali, so you can expect more visitors across the island. Medewi still feels considerably more relaxed than the main tourist areas of southern Bali.

April to June

April to June is a useful time to visit if you want the benefits of the dry season without travelling in the middle of the main July and August holiday period.

Rainfall is generally falling as the wet season ends, and the landscape is still very green.

July and August

These are among the driest months in Medewi, with relatively little rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

They are also popular months for travelling around Bali, so accommodation and transport can be busier than at other times of year.

If surfing is your main reason for coming to Medewi, the dry season is generally regarded as the more consistent period for the point.

September and October

September was when we visited Medewi and we really enjoyed it.

The weather was warm and it was a lovely time to be exploring the area. September is still within the dry season, although October is more of a transition towards the wetter months.

If you’re looking for a quieter feel than the height of the Bali summer holidays, September is worth considering.

Medewi during the wet season

November to March is generally the wetter period in Medewi, with December through February seeing considerably more rainfall than the middle of the dry season.

But wet season doesn’t necessarily mean that it rains all day, every day.

You can still have plenty of sunshine, particularly between showers, and the countryside becomes very green. If you’re happy to work around the weather rather than needing guaranteed sunshine every day, Medewi can still be a good place to visit.

The wet season can also be quieter, which suits Medewi rather well.

One thing to bear in mind is that heavy rain can affect roads and river mouths, and the sea conditions can change too. If you’re surfing, it’s worth checking local conditions rather than relying purely on the time of year.

When is the best time for surfing in Medewi?

If surfing is the main reason for your trip, April to October is generally considered the more reliable season for Medewi, with the dry season bringing more consistent conditions.

That said, Medewi can produce surf throughout the year, and the wet season shouldn’t automatically be ruled out.

Conditions can vary considerably from day to day, so anyone planning a surf trip should look at the forecast, swell and wind rather than choosing dates based on the season alone.

If you’re a complete beginner like I was, the time of year is only part of the equation. Having a good instructor and choosing suitable conditions made a much bigger difference to my first experience.

You can read more about my experience and what to expect in our Surfing in Medewi guide.

Is Medewi busy?

Medewi suits a slower, quieter kind of Bali holiday.

Even during the drier months, it feels much quieter than places such as Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta. The surf brings people to the area, but Medewi hasn’t developed into a major tourist centre.

July and August are likely to be busier simply because they are popular months for travelling around Bali, but the pace of Medewi remains relatively slow.

So, when should you visit Medewi?

It really depends on what you want from the trip.

For the driest weather: July to September

For surfing: April to October is generally the more consistent period, although Medewi can work throughout the year.

For fewer visitors: Consider the shoulder months or wet season.

For lush green scenery: The wetter months are hard to beat.

For a first visit: September worked very well for us.

There’s no single month that everyone needs to visit Medewi. If you want sunshine and outdoor days, the dry season is the obvious choice. If you’re more flexible and don’t mind some rain, the wet season can offer a quieter side of Medewi.

And whichever month you choose, I’d allow yourself a few days rather than trying to squeeze Medewi into a single overnight stop. It’s the sort of place that makes more sense when you slow down a little.
