Medewi isn’t somewhere you come for a huge choice of restaurants. It’s a small, laid-back surf village, and most of the places to eat are equally relaxed — local warungs, little cafés, beachfront restaurants and a few places aimed at surfers.
We found plenty of places to eat during our visit in September 2024, from simple Indonesian food to beachfront spots where you can sit with a drink and watch the waves, although when we initially came, our choice of staying at The Nyamo Surfschool & Stay was partially swayed by the proximity of The Holy Tree Kitchen!
You don’t need to plan every meal in advance. Part of the fun of eating in Medewi is simply wandering around, seeing what’s open and finding somewhere that takes your fancy.
Eating in Medewi
One of the things we liked about Medewi was how easy it was to eat casually.
You don’t need to dress up or plan every meal in advance. There are warungs dotted around the area where you can stop for nasi goreng, mie goreng, rice dishes and other Indonesian favourites, as well as cafés and restaurants where you can sit down for a longer lunch or dinner.
If you’re staying for a few days, it’s worth trying a few different places rather than sticking to one restaurant.
Warungs in Medewi
For a taste of everyday Indonesian food, look out for the local warungs.
Warungs are usually small, informal places serving inexpensive meals, and they’re a big part of eating in Bali. You might find a simple menu of rice and noodle dishes, chicken, vegetables, eggs and local specialities.
Warung Gede
Warung Gede is one of the local places to look out for in Medewi if you’re after simple Indonesian food.
It’s the sort of place that fits the Medewi atmosphere perfectly: informal, local and without any pretension.
If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful meal rather than somewhere fancy, this is the kind of place to try.
Warung Kayu
Another option for local food in Medewi is Warung Kayu.
It’s worth looking out for smaller local restaurants like this while you’re exploring the area. Menus and opening hours can be fairly informal in Medewi, so don’t be surprised if things change.
Cafés and restaurants in Medewi
There are also several more relaxed restaurants and cafés around Medewi if you’re looking for something beyond a traditional warung.
Rasta Cafe
Rasta Cafe is one of the names you’ll come across when looking for places to eat in Medewi.
It’s a relaxed place to stop for food or a drink, and fits well with the laid-back atmosphere around the surf area.
Avocado Resto
Avocado Resto is another option if you’re looking for somewhere with a wider choice of food.
It’s useful to have a few different restaurants to choose from when you’re staying in Medewi for several days, particularly if you’re travelling with someone who doesn’t want Indonesian food for every meal.
Mai Malu
Mai Malu is another Medewi restaurant worth knowing about.
As with many smaller places in the area, it’s worth checking what’s available when you visit rather than relying too heavily on an old menu or opening time.
Food near Medewi Beach
If you’re staying close to the beach, you’ll find several places to eat within easy reach of the surf area.
This is particularly convenient if you’re spending the day at Medewi Point. You can have breakfast before heading out, grab something after surfing or settle down for a drink as the day starts to cool off.
One of the nice things about Medewi is that eating doesn’t have to be an event. You can simply wander out, find somewhere that looks good and see what they’re serving.
These are some of the best spots to watch the waves roll in while grabbing a bite or a cold drink.
Lefty’s Bar & Restaurant, Bombora
Right on the point at Bombora, Lefty’s is a good option if you want to sit by the sea and watch the surfers. There’s an open-air deck overlooking the water, making it a particularly nice spot around sunset.
The Holy Tree Kitchen, Coffee & Surf Shop
Right on Yeh Sumbul Beach, The Holy Tree is a relaxed beachfront spot serving food and drinks. The Nyamo Surfschool is here too, so it’s particularly convenient if you’re staying there or have a surf lesson.
Bamboo Beach Bar & Kitchen
Bamboo Beach Bar is right on Yeh Sumbul Beach and is another relaxed place to eat with your feet almost in the sand. It’s a good spot for seafood, drinks and watching the sunset. It was probably our favourite spot.
What to eat in Medewi
You’ll find plenty of familiar Indonesian dishes around Medewi, including:
- Nasi goreng
- Mie goreng
- Nasi campur
- Satay
- Gado-gado
- Fresh fish and seafood
- Chicken and rice dishes
- Fresh fruit and juices
Nasi goreng and mie goreng are obvious choices if you’re hungry after a day in the water, while nasi campur is a good way to try several different flavours in one meal. Bamboo Beach Bar does an excellent Nasi Goreng.
And, of course, Bali is a good place to drink fresh fruit juice when it’s hot.
Breakfast and coffee
If you’re up early for surfing, breakfast is an important part of the day.
Some accommodation places and cafés offer breakfast, while other options are available around the village and beach area.
For surfers, it can be useful to find somewhere that opens early enough for your plans. For everyone else, there’s no particular reason to rush.
A slow breakfast, a coffee and a look at the surf isn’t a bad way to start a day in Medewi.
Eating in Medewi if you’re not a surfer
You don’t need to be a surfer to enjoy the food scene in Medewi.
The area is small enough that eating out can easily become part of your day, whether you’re heading to the beach, exploring the rice fields or simply sitting around doing very little.
If you’re staying for a week or more, having a selection of local warungs and restaurants nearby also makes Medewi much easier to settle into.
Dining Tips & A note about opening hours
Medewi is still a relatively small and laid-back destination, so opening hours can be less predictable than you might be used to in a larger tourist area.
Restaurants can close for a day, change their hours or have limited opening times outside busy periods. It’s worth checking locally before making a special journey, particularly if you’re visiting in the quieter season.
Food can take a little longer here, particularly at smaller warungs where everything is cooked to order, so allow a bit of extra time rather than expecting a quick meal.
Cash is king. While the larger establishments take card, smaller warungs operate cash only (IDR) so make sure you always have some cash.

Staying somewhere within easy reach of the beach makes eating out particularly easy, especially if you’re planning to walk to local warungs and restaurants.
