The Holy Tree Kitchen was one of the reasons we liked the location of, and booked, The Nyamo Surfschool & Stayduring our visit to Medewi in 2024. It’s close to both Nyamo and the beach, and during our stay it became one of our regular stops.
Our Experience
The Holy Tree Kitchen has a really chilled vibe, and we quickly became fans of it during our time in Medewi.
We’d head over for coffee and breakfast, and it was a great way to start the day before heading down to the beach. There’s a good menu with plenty of fresh, healthy options, and we particularly liked the coffee, smoothie bowls, and eggs.
The ginger and lemon tea was also excellent—freshly made, none of the tea-bag stuff!
And the views? Well, they’re just cracking.
There’s a really relaxed atmosphere, with a good playlist (especially for fans of old Ed Sheeran) and plenty of people coming and going before heading off to surf. The fact that it’s so close to both Nyamo and the beach was one of the reasons we loved staying in this part of Medewi.
It’s the sort of place where you can sit with a coffee for a while, have breakfast, watch people heading off to surf, and generally take your time. Exactly the sort of start to the day we like.
Coffee and breakfast
When we visited in September 2024, breakfast was around 50,000 IDR (just over £2 at the time), with dishes ranging from around 30,000 IDR for Indonesian food to 60,000 IDR for something like fish and chips. Prices will obviously have changed since then.

A meeting point for surfing
The location also made it a useful meeting point for surfing.
For us, being able to walk from Nyamo to The Holy Tree and then on towards the beach was one of the things that made staying in this part of Medewi so convenient. We were able to pick up our boards and meet our instructors just in front of the cafe.
There’s a small surf shop selling waxes, boards, and merchandise, so you can pick up a memento of your stay in Medewi. You can also grab a coffee and excellent homemade cake to take away.
The location
The Holy Tree Kitchen in Yeh Sumbul is situated on the beachfront and is only a minutes’ walk from Nyamo.
If you’re staying around this part of Medewi, it’s an easy place to add to your morning routine. There’s plenty of moto parking and board racks.
Would we go back?
Yes. We liked the atmosphere, the location, and the fact that it became part of our routine while we were in Medewi. The food was great, well-priced, healthy, and tasty.
