If you’re looking for somewhere to stay on Bali’s west coast that feels a world away from Seminyak or Canggu, Medewi is worth considering.
This small coastal area is best known for its long left-hand surf break, but you don’t need to be a surfer to enjoy staying here. Medewi has a quieter, more rural feel, with black-sand coastline, rice fields, small warungs and locally run accommodation rather than the big resort developments found further south. Medewi has a good mix of places to stay, from simple homestays and surf camps to beachfront villas, boutique retreats and more comfortable resorts.
Deciding on where to stay in Medewi scan be a little confusing because “Medewi” covers a wider area than the village itself. Many places that market themselves as Medewi are actually in nearby Yeh Sumbul, Airsatang or Pulukan. They are all useful bases for exploring Medewi and the surrounding coast, but the location can make quite a difference to your stay.
Accommodation is spread around the coast and inland villages, so choosing where to stay can make a difference to your experience. The coastline, surrounding countryside and slower pace make it an appealing place to spend a few days if you’re looking for a quieter side of Bali.
We’ve put together this guide to the accommodation we know about in and around Medewi, with links to book directly where possible as well as Booking.com options. We last visited Medewi in September 2024, so this guide is based on experiencing the area then
Staying in Medewi
Medewi
If surfing is the main reason you’re coming to Medewi, staying close to the point can make life very easy. There are several small surf stays and homestays around the village, as well as some more comfortable hotels and villas.
Yeh Sumbul & Airsatang
Just along the coast from Medewi, Yeh Sumbul and Airsatang have become an important part of the Medewi surf scene.
There are plenty of surf camps and smaller stays here, together with cafés, restaurants and places close to the beach. It is still easy to get to Medewi’s main surf break, while some accommodation here has a more beachfront feel.
Pulukan
Further along the coast you’ll find some of the area’s larger resorts and more luxurious accommodation. These can be a good choice if you want to combine Medewi’s relaxed surf atmosphere with more facilities and comfort.
Accommodation in Medewi

Nyamo Surf & Stay
A simple, friendly surf stay close to the beach
We stayed at Nyamo and found it to be exactly the sort of place that makes Medewi appealing: cheap and cheerful, relaxed and well located.
It is particularly handy for the beach and for getting to Holy Tree Kitchen, which is a short distance away and is a popular meeting point for surfers.
Nyamo is a good choice if you’re coming to Medewi primarily to surf and would rather spend your money exploring the area than staying somewhere luxurious.

Umadewi Surf & Retreat
A comfortable surf-focused stay close to Medewi’s famous break

Wide Sands Beach Retreat
Beachfront accommodation with a relaxed atmosphere
The beachfront location gives Wide Sands a very different feel from some of the smaller inland surf stays. We visited Wide Sands for a drink and food, but were also able to use the pool and sun loungers during our visit, which made it feel like somewhere we’d happily spend more time.
If you’re not looking for a backpacker-style surf camp but still want to be close to the Medewi area, Wide Sands is worth considering.

Ayumar Homestay Medewi
A small local homestay
Ayumar is the sort of smaller accommodation that is easy to miss when searching the large booking websites, but these independent homestays are a big part of the Medewi experience.
It is worth considering if you’d rather stay somewhere simple and local than in a larger resort.

You want to be close to the village, surf break and the heart of the local surf scene.
Stay in Yeh Sumbul or Airsatang if…
You want a choice of surf camps, cafés and beach accommodation and don’t mind being a little further from the main Medewi point.

Location is probably the most important consideration. Check how easy it is to get from your accommodation to the break, and whether the property offers surf lessons, board hire or local surf guidance.
