The Nyamo Surfschool & Stay, Medewi

We stayed at The Nyamo Surfschool & Stay during our trip to Medewi in September 2024. It wasn’t fancy, but we really liked it and thought it was great value.

It was also a good base for our first experience of surfing in Medewi, with the beach and surf nearby and the team able to arrange surf lessons before we arrived. We initially booked for four nights, but we stayed six nights.

Our stay at Nyamo

We chose Nyamo because we wanted somewhere that would work well as a base for exploring Medewi and learning to surf, rather than somewhere particularly luxurious.

For us, it worked really well.

The atmosphere was relaxed and it was easy to get down to the beach. We had arranged our surf lessons before arriving, and despite a late arrival, Riki, our host waited for us to arrive to welcome us. He then worked with us to organise surf lessons around our schedules and the waves.

We decided to extend our stay after our arrival, in part because we wanted to fit some more surfing in, but mainly because the vibe of Medewi was relaxed and we found we fell into this rhythm too.

Nyamo is situated moments from the beach. It has six or seven private ensuite rooms, and a shared kitchen (perhaps not the cleanest) though as it’s so close to the Holy Tree Kitchen we didn’t use this ourselves. The rooms each have their own area of outdoor space, and theres a chill-out area above some of the rooms with open air seating and lovely views, and a hammock, which we made good use of.

The rooms are basic, perhaps a tad dark and without air conditioning, but for the price, you can’t complain!

Surfing at Nyamo

One of the main reasons we chose Nyamo was the surf school.

I’d never surfed before. I’d actually wanted to try it since backpacking in 2006, so finally getting in the water in Medewi was a bit of a moment for me.

The instructors were excellent and made my first experience of surfing much less intimidating. I managed to get up and catch waves a few times, so I was pretty pleased with that!

If you’re already a surfer, you’ll obviously have different priorities from me. But if you’re a beginner and want somewhere where you can arrange lessons and board hire as part of your stay, Nyamo is worth considering.

Where is Nyamo?

Nyamo is in the Medewi area, making it a convenient base for getting down to the beach and exploring the surrounding area.

We sometimes used a scooter during our stay, including one with a surf rack, which made getting around easy. For longer trips, we mostly used a driver.

We also found that exploring on foot was quicker at times, especially strolling along the beautiful beaches hunting out a beer and a sunset. Medewi is also a great place for an off-road run.

Getting around from Nyamo

We didn’t rely entirely on a scooter.

Our host, Riki, arranged our airport transfer for us. We then took the driver’s WhatsApp details and messaged him when we wanted to pop out.

We mostly used him for quick trips to the cash machine, which was a bit far out of town and had fairly small withdrawal limits.

Having a local driver’s number was useful and meant we didn’t need to worry about finding transport every time we wanted to go somewhere.

What we liked about Nyamo Surfschool & Stay

  • Great value for money
  • A good base for surfing in Medewi
  • Surf lessons can be arranged
  • Relaxed and unfussy
  • Convenient for getting to the beach
  • Good option if you’re looking for somewhere practical rather than luxurious

Is Nyamo right for you?

I’d consider Nyamo if you’re looking for a straightforward place to stay in Medewi with surfing as part of the experience.

It suited us because we weren’t looking for somewhere fancy. We wanted somewhere comfortable, reasonably priced and well placed for getting to the beach.

If you’re looking for a luxury resort with lots of facilities, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for.

But if you want a relaxed base for surfing and exploring Medewi, our experience was very positive.

Would we stay at Nyamo again?

Yes. We enjoyed our stay and thought it was good value. I’ld definitely recommend it you’re looking for good value accommodation rather than luxury.

For us, it was a particularly good choice because it helped make trying surfing for the first time feel manageable. We could arrange the lessons before we arrived, get down to the beach easily and then come back to a simple, relaxed place to stay. Riki, the host, is great. As are the surf instructors based around this accommodation.
